For many years, Lumby, known as the ‘Gateway to the Monashee’, was a best kept secret, known only to the adventuresome few who discovered the beautiful mountains and high country lakes of the region. The awe-inspiring Monashee Mountains, ‘the Mountains of Peace’ do beckon the outdoor enthusiast with Lumby offering the best of small town living, coupled with good access to the urban centre of Vernon and the quiet of a rich agricultural valley.

The town of Lumby was named after Moses Lumby, a man of great vision who was one of the original shareholders, along with Forbes Vernon and Francis Barnard of the Okanagan Shuswap Railway. It was this railway which connected Vernon to the Trans-Canada Railway at Sicamous. The Okanagan Shuswap Railway connected to the paddlewheel boats on Okanagan which allowed access to the larger market for the entire Okanagan Valley enabling this region to boom in the late 1800 and early 1900’s.

Today Lumby has a growing and diversified economy still focused on lumber and agriculture. Many new residents are moving for the lifestyle which allows them great access to the pleasures of the outdoors while still enabling them good access to both Vancouver and Vernon.
